Here is a myth that costs Australians a fortune. Plenty of people believe that once they buy a new car, they are locked into servicing it at the dealer or they will void the warranty. It is not true, and it never has been under Australian law. You have a choice, and using it can save you real money without giving up a thing.
The law is on your side
Under the Australian Consumer Law, a manufacturer cannot force you to service your car at their dealership to keep the warranty valid. What they can require is that the car is serviced on schedule and to the manufacturer specification, using parts and fluids that meet the standard, by a qualified mechanic. That is it. Where the work is done is your call.
The competition regulator, the ACCC, has said this plainly. As long as an independent workshop follows the logbook, uses the right quality parts and stamps the book, your new-car warranty stands. A dealer cannot knock back a genuine warranty claim just because you had your services done somewhere else.
What keeps your warranty intact
- Service on time, at the intervals in your logbook.
- Work done to the manufacturer specification, with the right parts and fluids.
- Carried out by a qualified mechanic, which is exactly what we are.
- The logbook stamped and the work recorded, so you have the history.
What a logbook service actually covers
A logbook service is not one fixed job. It follows the schedule the manufacturer set for your specific car, and that schedule changes as the kilometres climb. An early service might be oil, filter and a thorough inspection. A bigger interval further down the line can add things like spark plugs, brake fluid, coolant, filters and belts. We work to your book, so your car gets exactly what it is due, no more and no less.
Every one of our logbook services includes a proper going over while the car is on the hoist. Brakes, suspension, steering, tyres, leaks and anything wearing out. Often that inspection is where we catch the small problem before it becomes the expensive one, which is half the value of servicing on time in the first place.
Why people bring it to us instead of the dealer
- Price. We are an independent workshop, not a dealer network, and it usually shows in the bill for the same scheduled work.
- One stop. The car is already here for tyres, so alignment, brakes and the service happen in one drop off rather than three.
- You deal with us. Melinda and George are on site, not in a call centre. You talk to the people doing the work.
- Straight advice. If something can safely wait, we will tell you. If it cannot, we will tell you that too, with the reason.
Keep your paperwork either way
Wherever you service, hold onto the records. Keep the stamped logbook and the invoices, because that history is what proves the car was maintained if you ever make a claim, and it is worth real money when you come to sell. We stamp the book and give you a clear invoice of exactly what was done every time.
